Tackling 15 - Drift Defence

Video Subtitles

We've now practice tackle techniques and team tracking in several situations the next exercise progresses the teamwork element by introducing our first defensive system. The drift defense this system is usually used when there are more attackers than Defenders. Four attackers run out against three Defenders forming an attacking line and a defensive line all players must be in tackle suits a feeder passes the ball to the attackers who can only pass at this stage The Defenders should be slightly staggered and must move up together as the attackers passed the ball each Defender pushes across from in to out covering the next attacking opponent. The aim is to develop a heads-up defense, which means that each Defender must look up and scan between the ball and the attacking alignment to ensure that they're numbered off against an opponent. Defender should be aligned opposite the inside shoulder of the attacker. The defense must move forward as a line only drifting from into out when the movement is initiated by the first offender and only after his opponent has passed the ball the drift continues until the tackle is made. Good stuff. Alright, here we come. The defensive line must start from an onside position and players should align with that outside foot forward consistent line speed is important and this is also set by the inside Defender. fairy communication Good. Well done nice defense. Well done. It's like shoulder inside shoulder spacing of Defenders is important here. The second Defender has not aligned on the inside shoulder of his opponent leaving a big hole in the defense. Defenders must talk to each other and point at their opposite attacker. They must continually communicate and Trust the defender on their inside keeping the shape of the line at all times. Defenders can make a tackle if appropriate ensuring good tackle technique.
